January 30th: The News in Brief

January 30, 2022 - Today seems to be a rather loaded day for the music world, and holds a lot of great news, as well as a cool part of music history!

Celebrating the Late Marty Balin on His Birthday (1942)

Martyn Jerel Buchwald, known professionally as Marty Balin, was a co-founding member of Jefferson Airplane, and later, a member of Jefferson Starship. Balin would have been 81 years old as of today.

Stephen Peter Marriott, was the co-founder of both Small Faces and Humble Pie, and has been recognized by artists such as Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Perry, Clem Burke, and Paul Stanley as one of the best vocalists ever. Marriott died far too young at the age of 44, and would have been 76 today.

Phil Collins Celebrates His 72nd Birthday (1951)

David Philip Charles Collins, known as the drummer and (eventual) lead singer of Genesis, celebrates his birthday today. He learned to play the drums at age five, and at the age of 72, has 67 amazing years worth of experience!

Marking the 54th Anniversary of the Beatles' Infamous Rooftop Concert (1969)

The infamous 42-minute concert put on by the Beatles (joined by keyboardist Billy Preston) on top of the Apple Corps Headquarters. It was stopped by the police just after their song "Get Back".

Paul and Linda McCartney Write and Record "Give Ireland Back to the Irish" (1972)

Within the 24-hour period after Bloody Sunday, Paul and Linda McCartney penned and recorded their debut single as a form of protest against the shooting of 13 civil rights protesters in northern Ireland. It was released under their band name, Wings.

Neil Young Named MusiCares Person of the Year (2010)

The MusiCares 20th anniversary Gala held in 2010, which also saw performances by Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Wilco, Dave Matthews, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, was dedicated to Young as their person of the year.

Mick Jagger Named Most Stylish Rockstar by Complex (2013)

Complex, a well-known lifestyle website, had released a list including 50 stylish rockstars, such as Prince, David Bowie, Keith Richards, Kurt Cobain, and Sid Vicious. Their number one spot, however, went to Mich Jagger. In their statement regarding this choice, they claim “...he definitely set the bar for flamboyant frontmen."
