Released Today in 1979: Pink Floyd's "The Wall"

Image
On this day in 1979, Pink Floyd released " The Wall ", a progressive rock opera following the story of a jaded rock star named Pink who creates a sort of "wall" between him and the rest of the world due to self-imposed isolation. Although it initially received mixed reviews, it is now rightfully regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time and even got its own movie in 1982. Image Credit: Amazon Music This album is one of the few that I hold particularly close. My mom raised me on Pink Floyd's music and often made a lot of references to their music, particularly to the end of " Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) ", when Roger Waters could be heard yelling "If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding! How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?!" when I wouldn't eat my dinner. Being a child who perceives everything in a literal sense, as well as being an American, one could understand how disappoin...

Celebrating 55 Years Of Jefferson Airplane Album "After Bathing At Baxter's"

Image
On this day in 1967, Jefferson Airplane released one of their most essential albums, " After Bathing At Baxter's" . Although it didn't chart as highly as " Surrealistic Pillow ", its predecessor, it did manage to peak at #17 on the Billboard album chart.  Image Credit: Wikipedia Part of what makes " After Bathing At Baxter's" so important is the fact that it marked a new era for Jefferson Airplane. It was from this point forward that they began to find a heavier, more psychedelic sound. Members Grace Slick and Paul Kantner also began to rise as the main composers of the band as founder Marty Balin's contributions to the songwriting process decreased accordingly. Songs became longer and featured multiple parts rather than the "standard length pop songs" the band, mainly Balin, usually wrote. Keeping in theme with their gravitation towards psychedelic rock, the album was aptly named, as "Baxter" was the band's codenam...

Remembering Jimi Hendrix: A Brief Biography

Image
Today we are remembering the legendary Jimi Hendrix, who would have been celebrating his 80th birthday today.  James Marshall "Jimi" Hendrix was born in Seattle, Washington to parents Lucille Jeter and James Allen "Al" Hendrix in 1942. He began learning guitar at age 15 after taking an interest in rock 'n' roll artists of the time such as Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley. While enlisted in the army at age 19, he spent his free time listening to blues artists such as Jimmy Reed and Albert King, as well as listening to Bob Dylan's records repeatedly. He was discharged a year later and moved to Clarksville, Tennessee, where he and fellow serviceman Billy Cox formed their first band, The King Kasuals. He also got the idea to learn to play with his teeth around this time after seeing Butch Snipes perform that same trick back in Seattle.  Hendrix in 1969 By David Redfern/Redferns (GettyImages)   Hendrix worked with numerous bands and artists befo...

Donovan Releases New Single "Rock Me" Featuring David Gilmour of Pink Floyd

Image
On Thursday, November 24, Scottish folk rock singer Donovan released a new single titled "Rock Me" featuring Pink Floyd frontman David Gilmour. This is the first single off of his new album, "Gaelia", which is to be released on December 2nd. It has amassed almost 60k views in under 24 hours with overwhelmingly positive feedback thus far. My opinion? I think it's well deserved.  Donovan Performing on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, 1969 The song showcases Donovan's signature simplistic style in only the most Donovan way possible. The verses are  accompanied only by guitars, and the choruses of the song use a slightly heavier guitar tone   that gives off more of a psychedelic rock sound. Otherwise, they are only accompanied by a simple drum beat seemingly influenced by traditional Celtic Music. David Gilmour sang along for much of the song and brought a very Pink Floyd-esque sound to it through his guitar work over the verses. According to Donovan's Fac...
